Why Oregano is more than just an herb!

Origanum vulgare:

Also known as Oregano is a species that is related to the mint family. It’s Greek meaning is “mountain joy” due to where it grew. It was used not only for cooking but also as an aromatic. But lets get to the point….why do I LOVE Oregano? Besides the wonderful aroma and the fact that it tastes amazing, Oregano has some powerful plant magic! Lol it has many health benefits and calming properties which is why it is always in my home. The oil of oregano contains thymol and carvacrol which are two very powerful antimicrobial agents! YES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT! Thymol and carvacrol have been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and staphylococcus aureus!

Oregano is also known for it’s antioxidant properties as well. Oregano ranked higher than apples, potatoes, oranges and blueberries in antioxidants!!! So what should I use and how? Fresh is always best for cooking and adding to dishes. Make sure Lear’s are a vibrant green in color with no brown spots. Wrap in damp paper towel to store. I also love oregano oil for use of chest infections, colds, and skin conditions that may be caused by bacterial issues. I use three drops Oregano oil to one tablespoon coconut oil and blend then apply to chest and bottom of feet for colds or to infected area for skin issues. You may add more oregano to the mixture once you have had no issues for twenty four hours on skin where the oil has been applied. If you have redness, you can apply milk with a cotton ball to help calm the skin.
